sharenergy is a new and innovative way to use community energy to make renewable energy. it’s been called ‘local power for local people’ !
sharenergy is delivered by Energy4All, a national not-for-profit company owned by the renewable energy co-ops it creates.
Advantage West Midlands (the local Regional Development Agency) provide funding for sharenergy to develop renewable energy projects right up to and through planning. The project is then built using community finance via a public share offer and owned by a community co-op. This model is one which has already been proven to work for wind power around the UK, and we are hoping to explore other technologies and scales in the Rural Regeneration Zone.
sharenergy is not a grant scheme. the projects we develop will be financed by the community: that is, by public shareholders who put in £250 to £20,000 of their own money, see a decent return on investment and get control over how the project is run.
These projects can be quite significant: Westmill Wind Co-op in Oxfordshire is one of Energy4All’s co-ops: a 100% community-owned windfarm with 5 turbines of 1.3MW each and memeber investment of over £4.5 million!
There are already a number of local groups and individuals working with sharenergy on hydro-power, wind power, biogas and biomass projects.
sharenergy is creating a region-wide community which will develop and own renewable energy in it’s own back yard.
